German ice hockey juniors remain first class at the U20 World Cup

The German ice hockey juniors won the relegation game at the World Championships in Canada and remain first class. Coach Tobias Abstreiter’s team defeated Kazakhstan 4:3 (1:2, 2:1, 1:0) in the deciding match in Ottawa. Last year, the selection of the German Ice Hockey Association saved itself from relegation in the relegation. The next World Cup will be held from December 26, 2025 to January 5, 2026 in the US cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul.

The Kazakhs shocked the German team, which had lost all four games in the preliminary round, with the opening goal after five minutes. Just eight seconds later, Maxim Schäfer from Eisbären Berlin equalized. Kazakhstan again struck ice cold through Nikita Sidnikow (18th minute) and Artur Gross (23rd).

The two-goal deficit seemed to wake up the DEB selection. Schäfer with his second goal (24th) and Edwin Tropmann (25th) equalized to 3-3 within 21 seconds. Once again with one more player on the ice, Julius Marsh, who plays for the Moncton Wildcats in the Canadian junior league, made the decision (45th).
