BYD surpasses Tesla in the sale of electric cars

New York. The growth of Chinese electric vehicles continued in December and BYD snatched the crown of the world’s largest seller from the American Tesla for the second time, according to information recovered by agencies.

BYD, China’s largest electric vehicle maker, delivered 207,734 fully electric vehicles in December, representing an annual increase of about 9 percent.

In the fourth quarter, BYD delivered around 595 thousand electric cars. This figure was greater than the 495,570 vehicles sold by Tesla, which gave the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer the world sales crown for the second time.

For the full year, BYD sold about 1.76 million electric vehicles, an increase of about 12 percent year-on-year.

Tesla invoiced 1.79 million, which represented a one percent reduction from the 1.81 million units sold in 2023, and fell short of estimates of 1.8 million units, according to 19 analysts surveyed by LSEG.

Reducing European subsidies, the shift in the United States toward lower-priced hybrid vehicles and tougher competition from China’s BYD have put pressure on Tesla, controlled by Elon Musk.
