French reject treaty with Mercosur

French farmers who will demonstrate this week against what they consider unfair foreign competition and excessive regulation arrived yesterday in convoys of tractors around Paris. Protesters have led protests across Europe throughout 2024 and gained new momentum last month after the European Union and Mercosur announced an agreement in principle on a free trade agreement. On January 13, representatives of agricultural unions will meet with the French Prime Minister, François Bayrou, to express their concerns. Supporters of the deal, including Germany, say it will help reduce Europe’s trade dependence on China and protect it against tariffs announced by Donald Trump. The image was taken during a caravan held on January 30 of last year in Strasbourg.
