Carlos Sainz ruins his victory at the Dakar Rally

Four times has Carlos Sainz senior die Dakar Rally won – with four different brands. He had planned his fifth victory with the fifth car manufacturer (Ford) for 2025. But nothing will come of it. The father of Formula 1 star Carlos Sainz Jr. lost a lot of time on Monday after his rollover on Sunday.

The 62-year-old first had to fix a tire defect on his Ford, then he had problems with the navigation. Sainz is already more than an hour and a half behind the new leader Henk Lategan (Toyota) from South Africa, meaning the rally legend can probably write off his title defense. Local hero Yazeed Al-Rajhi (Toyota) won the two-day second stage around the Saudi Arabian town of Bisha in the southwest of the country ahead of Lategan despite a two-minute penalty.

For the motorcyclists, the KTM pilot presses the button Daniel Sanders continues to make its mark on the 47th edition of the Dakar Rally. The Australian won the stage on Monday and was more than seven minutes ahead of the second-placed Honda rider Skyler Howes from the USA at the finish. In the overall standings, Sanders’ lead over Howes is 12:36 minutes.

The Austrian Tobias Ebster is in 14th place, 30:26 minutes behind.
