Karla Sofía Gascón and Javier Bardem, nominated for the Hollywood Screen Actors Guild Awards

The Spanish interpreters Karla Sofia Gascón and Javier Bardem They are among the nominees for the Screen Actors Guild of America (SAG) awards. The Spaniard is up for the award for best leading actress in film for her work in ‘Emilia Perez’ while Bardem is a candidate for the award for best actor in a miniseries or television film for his performance in ‘Monsters: The Story of Lyle and Erik Menéndez’.

The devastating wildfires ravaging Los Angeles forced the cancellation of the nominations announcement event for the SAG Awards 2025, which the organization announced in a statement. The award ceremony, which will be held on February 23 at the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall in Los Angeles and will be broadcast live on Netflix, will feature ‘Wicked’ in film and ‘Shogun’ in series, both with five nominations, as big favorites.

Along with Gascón for ‘Emilia Pérez’, competing for the best actress award are Mikey Madison for ‘Anora’, Cynthia Erivo for ‘Wicked’, Pamela Anderson for ‘The Last Showgirl’ and Demi Moore for ‘The Substance’. ‘Emilia Pérez’ is also nominated for the joint award for best cast and best supporting actress for Zoe Saldaña’s work.

This nomination represents new recognition for Gascón who, after being awarded along with the rest of the film’s cast at Cannes and winning the best actress award at the European Film Awards a few weeks ago, was also nominated at the 82nd edition of the Golden Globes that were held last weekend. In the awards given each year by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the Spanish actress was up for the award for best actress in a comedy or musical, but finally the award went to Moore for ‘The Substance’.

Jacques Audiard’s film, which is nominated for the Goya for best European film, is undoubtedly one of the big favorites to lead the Oscar nominations that will be announced on Friday, January 17.

FOURTH SAG NOMINATION FOR BARDEM

For his part, Bardem, who was also nominated for the Golden Globes for his work in ‘Monsters: The Story of Lyle and Erik Menéndez’, is competing for the award for best leading actor in a miniseries or television film with Colin Farrell, nominated for ‘The Penguin’, Richard Gadd, candidate for ‘My Stuffed Reindeer’, Kevin Kline for ‘Disclaimer’ and Andrew Scott, candidate for ‘Ripley’.

With his performance in the Netflix series, Bardem thus accumulates his fourth nomination at the SAG Awards, where he already won in 2009 in the category of best supporting actor for his role as the murderer in ‘No Country for Old Men’. The Spaniard was also nominated for best supporting actor in 2013 for his work in the James Bond saga film ‘Skyfall’ and in 2022 as best leading actor for ‘Ser los Ricardo’.
