“I don’t think that the two countries are ready to discuss the issue of enclaves at the moment,” Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan stated today in response to Azatut’s question.
In particular, “Azatutyun” asked Mirzoyan that if Azerbaijan brings to the agenda of demarcation commissions a proposal to continue demarcation in the enclave-exclave sector, what will be the position of the Armenian side: to leave the situation as it is or to carry out an exchange?
“I don’t think that the two countries are ready to discuss this issue at this moment. The method and geographical location, where there is a perception to continue the work on both sides, are a little different and less risky,” answered Mirzoyan.
To the clarifying question, from where will they continue the demarcation, Mirzoyan answered: – “Now, if I say from the northernmost point of Armenia, or from the southernmost point, or from village X, it will not change much in the context of your question. You are asking about enclaves. I say there is no such agreement. On the contrary, there is a general perception that issues, including those, should be discussed at a later stage with different perspectives in mind.
To another question, whether demarcation can continue from the occupied territories of Armenia, the Foreign Minister answered: – “At this stage, in the interest of the demarcation process and in the interest of gradual stabilization, I would continue the demarcation from a place that brings or aggravates less potential conflicts, but this is for the decision of the demarcation commissions.”
Baku and Yerevan announced today that a meeting of border demarcation commissions is planned for January.
After returning the four villages of the Tavush sector to Azerbaijan, the parties ratified the demarcation regulation in the spring of 2024. According to this document, Yerevan and Baku must agree on which sectors will be demarcated in the near future.
“I am convinced that the positive experience of demarcation in 2024 should be developed in a calm, working environment. We are ready for this kind of work,” Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said today, without specifying the date and place of the meeting of the committee members.
