Gibellina is the “Capital of contemporary art” in 2026. This was established by the Council of Ministers, on the proposal of the Minister of Culture, Alessandro Giuli.
The jury – we read again in the press release released by Palazzo Chigi – in the final meeting on 1 October 2024 unanimously agreed to propose Gibellina (in Sicily) for the awarding of the title of Italian Capital of Contemporary Art for the year 2026 with the following reasons: for the significant representative value of an artistic reality that has become a symbol of rebirth through art; for his planning ability in reactivating his extraordinary heritage of works, combining memory and future, conservation and valorization, attention to the local and international ambition; for the involvement of new generations and all citizens, consulting the wider territory on the basis of a common civic awareness, forming alliances with public and private, national and transnational institutions; for being a pioneer city of urban regenerationand for the ability to be both a city-work and a city to be inhabited.
