National coach Gislason is taking 17 handball players to the World Cup

National coach Alfred Gislason is traveling to the Handball World Championship with 17 players. As the German Handball Association (DHB) announced after the arduous 28:26 friendly win in Hamburg against Brazil in the evening, goalkeeper Joel Birlehm and pivot Tim Zechel will not travel to the World Cup quarters in Silkeborg, Denmark.

The 65-year-old Gislason can register a total of 18 players for the World Cup by the morning of the first match day. By nominating only 17 players, the Icelander can bring in another player as a so-called late entry during the tournament if necessary. 16 players can be used per game.

The German team travels to the World Cup quarters this Monday after training and lunch. The opening opponent in Herning is Poland on January 15th (8:30 p.m.). This is followed by the preliminary round games against Switzerland on January 17th (8:30 p.m.) and the Czech Republic on January 19th (6:00 p.m.). The first three teams qualify for the main round.
