Ice hockey: Olli Jokinen tells why he curses

Ice hockey coach Olli Jokinen the behavior speaks volumes in Sweden, and now the man himself has commented on his extradition a few days ago.

Jokis, who pilots Timrå IK, has quickly become an interesting figure in Sweden. In particular, his flamboyant coach persona has caught on. In the course of the autumn, the Swedish media reported several times about Jokinen’s outspoken comments.

For the first time, Jokinen’s use of language came up during the training season, when he lectured his players accompanied by a lot of profanity. Later he told his wife Katerina Jokinen having given strict feedback.

This week, Jokinen made it to the headlines again with the same merits, and feedback came again.

After the opening round, Timrå lost 0–1 against Växjö. Jokinen spoke angrily and used the word “fuck” almost 40 times during the break. In the end, Timrå lost the match after a shootout with a score of 2–3.

Timrå published Jokinen’s speech on social media on Wednesday.

Video attracted attention as far as North America, and eventually Jokinen also commented on his speech.

“The players definitely improved their grip after that. The second and third sets were better, as was Saturday’s match,” commented Jokinen For Expressen referring to the 4–1 win over Skellefteå.

According to Jokinen, the emotional outburst was only the second of the season on the scale seen.

“I’m just myself. I wouldn’t want to use the v-word that much, but that’s who I am.”

Jokinen says that he suggested to Timrå’s media people that his swearing could have been censored, as is customary in North America.

“Hopefully we will do the same in the future. Or hopefully I won’t have to use that word so much.”

“I never get angry with the players when I see that they have the right attitude, the desire to work and the competitive spirit in order. But it’s frustrating if they have a bad attitude and feel like they don’t care.”

Jokinen says that he has not received much feedback about his language use. Except from one direction.

“From my wife. He wonders why I had to do that again. He wonders when I learned to get my message across without that word.”

Timrå is fourth in the SHL standings after collecting 58 points in 33 matches. Färjestad, who is pulsating at the top, is seven points away.
