BMW sold 2,450,804 cars last year, four percent less than the previous year. They attribute the reduced deliveries to the sluggish economic growth in China, the world’s largest car market, but also to weak demand in their native Germany.

On the Chinese market, BMW’s sales fell by 13.4 percent, and in Germany by 5.3 percent.

The bright spot was the battery electric vehicle (BEV) segment, with a total of 426,594 cars sold, 13.5 percent more than in 2023.

BMW thus followed the weaker results of other large companies in the German automotive sector.

Productionđač luxury car maker Mercedes-Benz reported last week that it sold 2.39 million cars and vans last year, down four percent from 2023.

Sales of passenger cars in China fell by seven percent, despiteč recovery in the čfourth quarterč.

China is the most important market for all the leading German car manufacturers, but lately they have been facing problems due to intense domestic competition, especially in the electric vehicle sector, and trade tensions, the Dpa agency notes.

Sales of battery-powered cars in China are growing strongly, but overall demand is still weaker due to the slowing economy.

Last year, Mercedes-Benz sold 23 percent fewer electric vehicles than in 2023, and in the fourth quarter the decline deepened slightly.

And auto giant Volkswagen (VW) reported last week that it sold 1.4 percent fewer core brand cars in the year just ended, with an 8.3 percent drop in shipments to China. Sales of electric vehicles decreased by 2.8 percent.

“The year 2024 was difficult worldwide, given the weak economy, political challenges and strong competition, especially in China,” said VW sales chief Martin Sander.
