Last year, the Finnish car fleet aged at a record speed

Renew about 74,000 passenger cars were registered last year, says the Automotive Information Center. The number decreased by more than 15 percent from the previous year.

The average age of passenger cars increased to 13.6 years. The Automotive Information Center says that the increase in average age has been faster than in previous years, as new car registrations have clearly fallen short of their long-term average. Back in the 2010s, an average of over 130,000 new passenger cars were registered in Finland per year.

Finland’s oldest fleet of passenger cars can be found in Kainuu, with an average age of 15.9 years. The youngest car fleet is in Uusimaa, where the average age of passenger cars is 11 years.

Last year, just under 30 percent of the cars registered for the first time were fully electric cars and a good 20 percent were plug-in hybrids. A good 10 percent of Finland’s entire car fleet is rechargeable.
