The post-Grillo era began in the M5s

The first national council of the M5s in 2025 marks the debut of the post-Beppe Grillo era. In fact, the entire five-star staff met on Monday 13 January – via video link – to begin to set the future of the new Five Star Movement that emerge from the “revolution” of ‘Nova’, the constituent assembly that changed the face of the Movement, starting from the farewell to the founder Beppe Grillo. But not only that: on the regeneration table there is also the issue of the two mandates, with leaders called upon to implement the indication of the basis for overcoming the rule. “Sleeves rolled up and a climate of sharing”, they say from Via di Campo Marzio, after the national council, which lasted just over five hours. With the leader Giuseppe Conte, discussing the future of the M5s, there were the vice presidents, the group leaders of the Chamber and Senate, up to the territorial representatives and the various political committees.

All the elite of the M5s were present to begin to give substance to the change of pace requested by the members of ‘Nova’, which reached its peak on 23 and 24 November. On 8 December, however, there were the results of the second consultation on the changes to the Statute, requested by Grillo.A vote which sanctioned, among other things, the elimination of the figure of the Guarantor, amid controversy and threats of a legal war between Conte and the co-founder. During the first meeting, the collegiate body was also discussed which – by will of the members – he will have to take the place that was occupied by the High One. But we are still in the early stages and the features of the new organ have not been defined in detail. Off we go the debate on overcoming the two-mandate rulecarried out desired by the base with the votes in the constituent assembly.

We are in an interim phase but – sources from the M5s say – there will certainly not be a total farewell to the beginning. “No to political careerism”, in short. “We are discussing a mandate that will be less stringent than before but will not be a ‘free for all'”, reason the five-star leaders. Among the innovations being examined by the national council is the institutionalization of the ‘Youth Network’ groups, the youth of the M5s, which should be recognized within the Statute. Then, the criteria for financing the activities of the territorial groups. An almost obligatory step, because being rooted in the territory is considered one of the “vulnus” that penalize the Movement in electoral competitions at a local level. And again, a first survey of the twelve thematic priorities indicated by ‘Nova’ members has begun. Proposals such as an end-of-life law, the legalization of cannabis and other topics chosen by the base. What is defined as a “check between the aspirations of our base and parliamentary activity” will serve to align the ‘desires’ of members with the legislative proposals presented in Parliament. The post-Grillo M5s is starting to take shape and the next meeting is next Monday, when the national council will meet again to implement the inputs received from the constituent assembly. Starting from the overcoming of the two-term rule.
