Lee Miller’s side as a war photographer is exhibited at FotoNostrum Barcelona

Yesterday, during the presentation of the exhibition, the photographer’s son, Antony Penrose, co-founder of the Lee Miller Archives and the Penrose Collection, said that the exhibition covers Miller’s time as a photographer during World War II, but also includes some of his fashion photographs.

The exhibition brings together 124 images from between 1940 and 1946 that cover the of the lives of Miller, said the curator of the exhibition, Leonor Fernandes, who explained that the exhibition has 110 photographs by Miller about the war and 14 about his role in the world of fashion, working for publications such as Vogue.

Antony Penrose stated that the sample is a selection of the more than 20,000 captures that were found in the attic of the family home a few weeks after Miller’s death. It was something that changed my life. We have always worked to preserve his legacy.

Throughout the photographs in the exhibition you can see how Miller’s camera lens captured war wounded, refugees, soldiers and field workers, nurses and victims, children and women.

Hitler’s bathtub

An iconic image of Miller stands out, in which she appears naked in the bathtub of Adolf Hitler’s apartment in Munich, in 1945, during a stay at his residence, the same day that the dictator and Eva Braun committed suicide.

Penrose explained that when her mother and her companion were there, she realized that they had him before them, It was explosive. and that they had to portray it.

This exhibition coincides with the premiere in Spain, on March 7, of the film Lee Miller, starring British actress Kate Winslet and directed by Ellan Kuras, which tells the life of the photographer with a focus on her experience as a war correspondent.

The director of FotoNostrum, Julio Hirsch-Hardy, stated that the Lee Miller exhibition will probably be the last exhibition that the gallery does in its premises, on Diputació Street, since for March or April of this year they plan to move to Born, near the Picasso Museum.
