US sports: NHL: Penguins goalkeeper Nedeljkovic makes history

Ice hockey goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic of the Pittsburgh Penguins made history in the NHL. The 29-year-old became the first goalie in league history to score a goal and an assist in the same game in his team’s 5-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres. First, Nedeljkovic prepared the interim 3-1 through Cody Glass, and in the final phase he scored the final score with a goal into the Sabres’ empty goal. He is only the 16th goalkeeper in the NHL to score a goal.

“It’s really exciting,” said Nedeljkovic: “I’ve always liked playing with the puck. I grew up watching some of the best players. Marty Turco and Martin Brodeur were two players I watched often and learned a lot from in terms of puck handling. That has always been part of my game for as long as I can remember.” Aside from scoring points, he also impressed in his core role and recorded strong 40 saves against the Sabres.

The German professional John-Jason Peterka did not contribute to the goal at Buffalo. The team from New York, which lost 13 games in a row over the course of the season, remains bottom of the Atlantic Division with 39 points.
