Animal of the week: The axolotl survives even tough surgeries

Government cut. Man invented scissors 6,000 years ago, while living in Mesopotamia. Nowadays, it is not even possible to live in the suburbs of the capital region.

When beards were trimmed with primitive bronze fiskars in the ancient sandy desert, far away in Mexico, the axolotl.

The tadpole-shaped amphibian stared silently in its home pond while the Aztecs built their temples. Whole heads were already cut in them.

Then the Spanish arrived. They implemented a radical social reform. Today, the capital Mexico City, estimated to be the fifth largest city in the world, sprawls over the Aztec ruins. About 21 million people live there, but not very many axolotls.

In the course of history, the axolotl’s home habitat was also destroyed, and today axolotls live mostly in zoos or as people’s pets, staring in terrariums.

Axolotl is a badass. It’s like a half-grown salamander, and in practice it is.

Usually salamanders, which includes the axolotl, start their lives as aquatic animals that breathe with gills until they progress to land animals that breathe with lungs. The axolotl does not undergo this metamorphosis. Its body seems to remain a child forever.

The special power of the youthful prodigy is the astonishing ability to regenerate. Even if you cut off an axolotl’s leg, it will grow back. The axolotl can even regrow parts of its internal organs or brain. The axolotl’s body does not form scar tissue, the wounds heal completely.

Of course, you must not hurt the axolotl. However, in the name of science, they are dissected and studied in order to find out all this.

About the budget cutting is less painful. Our finance minister shows according to the pictures even enjoying it.

So Finland would be like an axolotl. It could offer the government the joy of cutting even for years to come, without jeopardizing important functions.
