Real Madrid resolves against Real Sociedad and goes to the final of the Women’s Super Cup

Madrid victory 3-2 in the second ‘semi’ of Butarque, where on Sunday there will be a Clásico for the title

Real Madrid beat Real Sociedad 3-2 this Thursday with goals from Caroline Weir, Filippa Angeldahl and Linda Caicedo in the second semi-final of the Spanish Women’s Super Cup, which is being played in Leganés (Madrid) and in whose final will face FC Barcelona next Sunday in search of the title.

Again at the Butarque Municipal Stadium, the tournament looked for its second finalist. The meringues began in tune and on the left side Linda Caicedo combined well with Olga Carmona, who crossed low into the small area and, although Signe Bruun forced a shot due to the marking of a defense, Weir was attentive on the rebound to shoot the 1-0 (min .4).

The ‘txuri-urdin’ response did not take long, in a cross from Klara Cahynova from the right wing and Amaiur Sarriegi headed wide for turning his neck too much in his shot. It was, however, the prelude to the tie for Real Sociedad, through a long pass from Nerea Eizagirre that caught the white team out of adjustment and preceded a run by Amaiur Sarriegi.

The realistic ‘7’ gained the back of the centre-backs and stepped into the rival area, where she dribbled past the goalkeeper and scored with a quick shot at ground level. Not even 10 minutes had passed, but the brilliant start came to a sudden stop and the injury to Melanie Leupolz did not help the pace of the match, as she was replaced by Athenea del Castillo on the left side.

In that area, she and Carmona worked hard to cover gaps for Cahynova and Sanni Franssi, while Caicedo had gone to the opposite side to create danger. A slalom of hers ended in a right foot that Elene Lete deflected into a corner with her legs, but as a warning of the 2-1 score that settled a minute later after a pass from Weir while the Colombian galloped.

His quick assist in the heart of the area went to Filippa Angeldahl, who controlled it with her left foot and shot low, powerful and to the far post with her right foot. Despite the whites’ dominance on the scoreboard and in possession, Eizagirre had the last serious chance before the break thanks to a left-footed shot, after a set-piece shot, which he sent too high.

At the restart, without replacements by any team, the San Sebastian team took a step forward in the early stages, supported by set-piece actions. However, Real Madrid pressed forward and Weir stole the ball in a dangerous area, creating an attack that Bruun culminated with a shot over the crossbar.

Another approach by the Madridistas, in the 53rd minute, brought controversy in a slalom by Athenea on her wing and after a cut where she stepped on Emma Ramírez’s boot. Although the main referee, María Planes Terol, signaled a penalty in the first instance, she corrected her decision under consultation with the VAR and exasperated Alberto Toril who saw a yellow card for protesting.

They did not give up their efforts to increase the lead, and they brushed against it in a corner taken by Weir and which María Méndez finished narrowly wide, after a foreshortened jump. In that effort, Caicedo did get it right after another trademark run, speeding past Nahia Aparicio down the right wing, until scoring from point-blank range with his shot.

That already seemed like the sentence, despite there still being half an hour left to spend – with the addition -, although Andreia Jacinto tested the merengue goalkeeper Misa Rodríguez with a low right hand after stealing the ball. Both Toril and his counterpart, José Luis Sánchez Vera, exhausted changes and in fact Lorena Navarro, who had just entered the field, scored a goal that was disallowed.

A foul prior to his shot had left everything in a mess, but the ‘txuri-urdin’ team did reduce the gap in injury time with a ball pumped into the local area; Mirari Uria extended with a header and, also with a header, Sarriegi scored the final 3-2.

A new scare for Real Madrid was the blow that Alba Redondo hit with an opponent in the following play. After that, much worse was Real Sociedad’s double chance in the very long added time, first a shot by Elene Guridi after a commotion in the area and, when that corner was taken, a weak right hand from goalkeeper Lete, who had gone up.

All in all, the team coached by Toril emerged from the suffocation and confirmed its presence in the final against Barça, providing another National Super Cup Classic as the men’s teams did a few weeks ago in that controversial edition held in Saudi Arabia.
