Mexico does not foresee a trade war; T-MEC negotiation, in 2026

The date of renegotiation of the Mexico, United States and Canada Trade Agreement remains for the year 2026, as established by the decree issued by President Donald Trump on this matter, said the head of the Executive, Claudia Sheinbaum, who pointed out that in the relationship With the northern country, Mexico will rely on the official documents issued by Trump.

“I think the approach we have taken has been good, that we see things calmly and that we have this close communication with the United States government, which will increasingly be established in a more – let’s say – institutional-formal way, with the new administration, and that it is happening and that it will continue to happen,” Sheinbaum said during his conference.

In this sense, he commented that as soon as the head of the Ministry of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, establishes contacts with the new head of the US Department of Commerce, formal conversations on trade issues between both countries will begin. Contrary to what some voices predict, the president stressed that she does not perceive a trade war.

Sheinbaum asserted that Trump has his vision of the use of tariffs, both economically and in a negotiation with a country. In the case of Mexico, there is a willingness for collaboration and cooperation, with respect for our sovereignties on all issues, especially migration and security.

Later, when claiming her position in defense of sovereignty at this juncture, she questioned those opposition parties, PRI and PAN, that have questioned her and recently refused to sign a unity statement.

In this context, he asked to disseminate at the conference excerpts from the book by Francisco Labastida Ochoa in which he makes revelations about the political transition of 2000:

“I wonder (says the book): was it a coincidence that Zedillo handed over the financially bankrupt party to me? (…) What motivated you?” –Labastida asks in his book–. The main reason could be this: when the United States government made Mexico a loan of 40 billion dollars to face the crisis unleashed by the ‘December mistake’ – a negotiation that President Ernesto Zedillo personally managed – it was demanded commitment –that is, on behalf of the United States to lend the 40 billion dollars (…) and that, for this, the PRI would stop governing and he would hand over the Presidency to the opposition.”

That’s history, Sheinbaum said.
