Scientists have discovered “eternal chemicals” in expensive smart watches and fitness trackers

Studies have shown that the more expensive bracelets for fitness trackers and smart watches, the more dangerous substances they contain.

Researchers from the University of Notre Dame checked 22 bracelets for fitness trackers and smart watches and found that nine of them contain high PFAS levels (perforatory and polyfetorcal compounds). The analysis showed that most straps were made of fluerlastomer – synthetic polymers, which give rubber resistance to sweat, skin oils and lotions.

The study included both new and consumption bracelets, which were divided into price categories. Bracelets worth less than $ 15 were classified as “inexpensive”, those that cost from 15 to $ 30 – to “average”, and bracelets more than $ 30 were classified as “expensive”. Three tested bracelets belonged to an expensive segment, and in all of them the fluorine level was higher than that of cheaper copies.

But the most amazing result of this study, according to scientists, was the detection of extremely high concentrations of a particular type of PFAS – perftorgexanic acid. In some samples, the level of acid exceeded 1000 parts per billion, which is much higher than that of most other PFAS that met in consumer goods.

“Eternal chemicals” are associated with a number of health problems, including the weakening of the immune system, hormonal disorders, developmental development in children, low birth weight, accelerated puberty, increased blood pressure in pregnant women, as well as increased risk of certain types of cancer, such as Cancer of the kidneys and ovaries.

The authors of the study note that the experiment emphasizes the need for a deeper analysis of PFAS levels, which can be subject to bracelet owners for smart hours.
