Google Maps has changed its name to the Gulf of Mexico

Google Maps has adapted quickly to the geographical directives of the White House and decided to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico in the Gulf of America. “We have a consolidated practice of implementing changes to names when they were updated in official government sources,” Google said in an X post. The company has announced that, following these official sources, the one that calls the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) in the United States. The measure will affect Mount McKinley in Alaska previously known as Monte Denalim, and the Gulf of America, known all over the world for centuries as a Gulf of Mexico.

The update, however, concerns only the maps that can be consulted by the United States and both traditional names will remain valid in the rest of the world. “When official names vary among countries, Maps users see the local official name. In the rest of the world, everyone sees both names” he explained. It was Barack Obama who decided that the highest mountain in the country, in Alaska, returned to the native name of Denali to replace what had been given to pay homage to President William McKinley, which Trump admires for the use of duties as a political tool and for its colonialist past.
