Google has announced its intention to update Google Maps to reflect the executive order issued on January 20 by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, relating to the modification of the names of the Gulf of Mexico and the Mount Denali, respectively, in the Gulf of America and Monte McKinley. The company has declared on the X platform that the update of the nomenclature will be visible as soon as the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) will be updated. Google stressed that corporate policy provides for the application of modifications to toponyms when these are made official by competent government sources. In addition, when the denominations vary according to the countries, Maps users display the local official name, while both names are shown in the rest of the world.
Denali was previously known as Monte McKinley until 2015, when the administration of the time decided to restore the traditional name of the mountain. The United States Department of Interior confirmed its intention to follow the provisions of the executive order to implement toponymy changes. In an official press release, he said the US Board on Geographic Names, under his supervision, is working to quickly update the official federal nomenclature within the Gnis, making the changes immediately effective for government use. At the moment, no comments have been released by Apple regarding any changes to Apple Maps.
