EU countries call on European Commission to protect elections from interference

France, Germany and other EU countries want the European Commission to use its powers to protect the integrity of European elections from external interference in the Law on Digital Services. This is stated in the letter, which has signed 12 countries.

In the letter to France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Romania, Slovenia and the Spanish issues, the European Commission asked the European Commission promises to create a special EU special body to counteract the intervention.

“During the key electoral events, the growing threats of foreign intervention and destructive interventions are simply a challenge to our stability and sovereignty,” the letter said, which was attained by Reuters.

“Recent incidents are urgent and joint actions to protect the upcoming elections in the EU,” the letter reads.

EU diplomats have stated that it is mainly about Russia and China’s intervention, but also about other cases.

Extraordinary elections will be held in Germany on February 23.

Last week, the owner of the X social network Ilo Mask appeared at the pre-election event of the extreme party in Germany, supporting the political force for a few weeks.

In December, the Commission launched an investigation into the Tiktok social network, which belongs to Chinese BYTEDANCE due to the disability of restricting intervention in the Romanian presidential election.
