China develops a super -deep smart rig 15 km

China conducted an ambitious initiative to develop the world’s leading technology and drilling equipment, helping to ensure the future of energy and explore the deep structure in the Earth. Located in a national super project, this initiative will create the first super -deep 15,000 m smart rig in China. Deep Earth National Science and Technology Project is directed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, combined with many universities, research institutes and businesses.

The goal of the project is to create high -end scientific breakthroughs as early as possible and set criteria for other underground initiatives. Cat Lam University, one of the project participants, outlines a number of key technical challenges, including high temperature sludge control, automatic coordination needs super long drilling with many robots and systems. The core cable system can operate at a depth of over 10,000 m.

Currently, China’s deepest oil drilling well reaches about 11,000 m, is the second deepest oil well in the world. Dau wells are located in Shaya district, Aksu area, Xinjiang, built by China National Oil and Gas Group and completed in March last year. The deepest oil well in the world is the Z-44 Chayvo well in Russia, drilling on Sakhalin Island reaches a depth of 15,000 m. Along with two other deep oil fields in the region, the total reserves here are estimated at about 2.3 billion barrels of oil and 480 billion m3 of natural gas.

The deep structure in the earth is still one of the most mysterious and challenging environments to explore. At a depth of 10,000 m, the temperature can exceed 260 degrees Celsius and the pressure may be over 1,100 megapascal, which makes the technology and drilling materials limited. Therefore, deep ground exploration is even more difficult than diving into the deep sea or exploring the universe.

Super deep drilling projects have a great impact on global energy security. In China, underground oil reserves account for 34% of total resources nationwide, with large mines concentrated in the region such as Tarim and Sichuan Bank. Exploiting this resource can help China reduce dependence on foreign imports and enhance the independence of energy in the long run.

Since the 1980s, China has participated in the international geological collaboration project including the US and France to study the Himalayas and Tibet. Recently, China has proposed Earth CT project to take photos of the Earth’s cross section globally. In addition to drilling on land, China also made many steps in deep sea exploration. In 2023, China launched the first self -made ocean drilling ship called Mengxiang that could reach a depth of 11,000 m, one of the most advanced drilling ships in the world.
