Jan De Nul and DEME bring in contracts for two German wind farms

The Swedish energy company Vattenfall granted the contract for the installation of the connecting cables for the Nordlicht 1 and 2 wind farms to Jan de Nul. It concerns 196 kilometers of undersea cables that will transport electricity between the 112 windmills of the park.

Sector colleague Deme received two contracts for transport and installation of the foundations of the turbines. The contracts together account for a value of more than 300 million euros. DEME also received a contract for erosion protection of both wind farms.

When the parks will be operational, they are expected to deliver electricity for around 1.7 million German families. They would be good at full capacity for a production of 6 terawatt hours (TWH). The industry will also be supplied. Chemieurous Basf has a 49 percent interest in the two parks.

The two wind farms come in a zone 85 kilometers north of Borkum, the western one of the German Wadden Islands near the Netherlands. The construction is planned for 2026 and the parks should be fully operational in 2028. In 2026, DEME 68 foundations and the erosion protection will install for Nordlicht 1 (980 megawatts), followed by 44 foundations and erosion protection for Nordlicht 2 (630 MW) the year after.

Although it is still waiting for the final investment decision. It would be expected to be taken this year. Vattenfall organized a signing ceremony in which the different contracts were already allocated.

With the new contract, Jan De Nul will carry out six cable projects in Germany for offshore wind energy in Germany in the coming years. Germany is also no unknown territory for DEME.
