A large piece broke out of the huge iceberg from the A23A Antarctica, could be the first sign that it was disintegrating.

The A23A iceberg is double the area of the Greater London, weighing nearly 1,000 billion tons. It separated from the Filchner-Ronne ice of Antarctica in 1986 and was almost intact since the start of moving slowly to the north in 2020. It was drifting towards the southern Island of Georgia in the South Atlantic, Concerned that it could crash into the island, threatening a large amount of seals, penguins and wildlife.

Meijers said the icebergs were filled with deep cracks, and although A23A was shrunk over time and losing a much smaller piece, it retained the structure quite well. However, the new debris is a sign that the internal cracks are starting to break. Other giant icebergs disintegrated relatively quickly within a few weeks when they began to lose large pieces, according to Meijers.
However, it is still difficult to determine if this is a sign of a greater change in the upcoming. “I am very sorry to say that there is no exact scientific principle of how these things disintegrate. It is difficult to say whether they will disintegrate immediately or keep the texture for a longer time,” Meijers said .
Meijers also said that the direction of A23A towards the southern island of Georgia could hardly change after losing the 80 km2 band. But if it continues to break, it will cause less danger to wildlife because they can move between smaller bandages to find food.
Previously, a number of icebergs were stranded near the South Georgia Island, causing a large number of penguins and seals to die. According to TidiTi, A23A is expected to continue to the north but its exact journey depends heavily on local beaches.
