Brussels confirms that he will keep his support for UNRWA to fulfill his term after Trump’s announcement

The European Commission has reiterated this Thursday that it will continue its political and financial support to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees in the Middle East (UNRWA) so that it can fulfill its mandate after the decision of the US president, Donald Trump, to stop finance the agency.

“We do not want to speculate on the comments of the US administration. The European Commission is committed to supporting UNRWA at the political and financial level to allow its mandate to fulfill,” said the expansion spokesman, international and Mediterranean associations, Guillaume Mercier , at a press conference from Brussels.

Thus, he recalled that last year Brussels contributed 92 million euros that the agency could continue the work on the field. “I can assure that the support will continue,” said the community spokesman.

This message underlines EU’s commitment to the agency, which has contributed two thirds of food aid to the strip during the 15 months of Israeli offensive. Precisely Trump’s announcement comes when a new Israeli legislation has entered into force that puts obstacles to the agency and makes it difficult to access the Palestinians in Gaza.

The two laws prohibit the agency’s activities also in Israeli territory, in the middle foundation.

On the side of the UNRWA they have warned that the application of these laws will mean “huge limitations” for the agency when operating, pointing out that the ultimate goal of these measures is to “deny the refugees of Palestine the right to self -determination and erase their history and identity. ”
