Earthquakes in the Aegean Sea and Panic rumors

During the first week of February 2025, in the Aegean Sea between the Greek Islands of Santorini and Amorgos, hundreds of underground shocks of magnitude of up to 5.2 were recorded, the European and Mortary Seismological Center (EMSC) reports. Tourists leave the islands in the Aegean.

According to seismologists, we can talk about the consequences of a “large gap” ten kilometers south of Santorini (Greece). We are talking about the so-called Aegean plate-a small lithospheric plate in the Eastern Mediterranean, adjacent to the Eurasian, Afro-Arabian and Anatolian slabs.

Catastrophic events in this region took place earlier. So, for example, on October 30, 2020, an earthquake of magnitude 7.0 occurred here, as a result of which about 120 people died. On July 9, 1956, an earthquake of magnitude 7.5 occurred here, as a result of which more than 50 people died. Then one of the largest tsunami in the Aegean Sea arose, the height of which reached 25 m (however, because of the tsunami there was only one victim).

Against the background of the current seismic activity in many countries of the Eastern Mediterranean – not only in Greece and Turkey, but also in Israel, Syria and Lebanon, panic rumors are spreading about the high probability of a strong earthquake and tsunami, in which the height of the waves will reach tens of meters. These rumors are intensified, because in the last two days the inhabitants of the seaside regions have observed a strong storm, in which the height of the waves reaches 5-7 meters.
