The longest cargo ship in the world runs by wind, Neoliner Origin, has just lowered the water at Tuzla port, Türkiye, Interesting Engineering On February 3 reported. The ship is designed by French company Neoline and Turkish shipyard RMK Marine.

Neoliner Origin is 136 m long, promising to significantly reduce carbon emissions and open a green sea transport era. Notably, it can carry up to 5,300 tons of cargo through long distances.

After lowering, Neoliner Origin will be fully equipped in the next 6 months. In the summer, the ship will move from Türkiye to Saint-Nazaire, France. From here, the ship is expected to start the journey through North America, stop by Saint-Pierre-Et-Miquelon (France), Baltimore Port (USA) and Halifax (Canada).

“The project starts in 2023 with a vision for a greener and more sustainable future. This 136 m long ship will help reduce fossil fuel consumption by more than 80% and use wind energy as the main driving force.” , RMK Marine said.

Neoliner Origin works thanks to two carbon masts of Solid Sail can fold 76 m high and about 3,000 m2 of sail. The ship is equipped with wind shields that can be reduced to reduce the horizontal drift due to the impact of wind and waves, helping to maintain a stable direction. Neoliner Origin has a capacity of 265 containers of 6 m, 12 passengers in 6 double cabin and 13 -person crew. The hull is made of 75 blocks, cut from more than 3,500 tons of steel. The normal operating speed of the ship is 20 km/h.

“Thanks to the wind, and by reducing the speed of about 30 km/h to 20 km/h, we can reduce fuel consumption, thereby reducing emissions by 5 times higher than traditional ships,” jean Zanuttini, Chairman of Neoline, said. According to the international maritime organization (IMO), shipping accounts for about 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
