Snail -free and space -saving: How vertical gardening succeeds

Garden structures such as arbors, arches and pergolas give every garden an architectural peculiarity. They are often used over inputs, but are also suitable for the roof of paths. If you have enough space, you can treat yourself to the luxury in a corner of the garden with a seat arbor, to rest in the middle of fruits and flowers.

Pergoles can create beautiful shady seats – a blessing on hot summer days. Because the green roof of leaves and flowers creates a pleasant microclimate. Various climbing plants can empower themselves on the scaffolding of a pergola. To stimulate them upright grow, they need rank grilles.

Suitable plants are both ranking vegetables such as the field beans, pea, pumpkin and cucumber as well as fruits such as grapes or kiwi. Various climbing hydrangea, fluid, splendid wind and clematis varieties are suitable of the flowering plants.

“Vertically grown cucumber are straight and have a softer shell as those that I grow on the ground,” writes the author of the book “My vertical garden.” The plants are raised on a trellis or network.

The big advantage

With the vertical cultivation, the plants take away much less valuable soil and also attract fewer snails. Pumpkin tendrils are very long and thus restrict the space for other plants in a vegetable patch. According to the book author, it is much easier to control them when growing vertical.

However, irrigation is a bit more complex, since the vertical plants cannot simply access the groundwater, as in the bed. Therefore, regular water supply is around and up.
