Number of public charging stations in Flanders almost doubled in one year

The number of publicly accessible charging stations in Flanders has again grown sharply in 2024. From 32,620 at the end of 2023 it went to 59,239 at the end of last year, good for an increase of 81 percent or 73 extra charging points per day. Necessary, because the number of electric cars has also grown explosively: in Flanders alone, their number increased from 30,000 in 2021 to 194,000 in 2024.

With over 41,500 charging points, it is mainly about semi -public copies. That is infrastructure on car parks or supermarkets that everyone can use, but is not necessarily accessible 24 out of 24 and 7 in 7. This is the case with the now 17,650 public charging points.

Objective

The objective of the previous Flemish government has been considerably exceeded. The intention was to have at least 35,000 public ‘loading equivalents’ in 2025. That parameter takes into account both accessibility and loading speed. Even before the summer of 2024 the Cape was rounded, in the meantime we are already on the target one and a half times. More than two in three cities and municipalities have (many) more charging points than the estimated needs.

Although the supply seems sufficient today, the pace should not fall according to experts. The new Flemish Minister for Mobility Annick de Ridder (N-VA) does change the focus and focuses heavily on charging squares.
