Seon in Sweden to 12 years in prison a woman accused of enslaving Yazidi women and children in Syria

The Justice of Sweden has sentenced a penalty of twelve years in prison to a woman accused of committing acts of genocide and crimes against humanity for enslaving women and children belonging to the Yazidí minority when she resided in the city of Raqqa, in Syria, where it was part of the Islamic State terrorist group.

The woman, identified as Lina Ishaq, of Swedish origin and 52 years, has been found guilty of committing these crimes between 2014 and 2016, when she kept six children and three women captive in “slavery conditions” in their home in Raqqa , according to information from the Swedish newspaper ‘Actonbladet’.

This verdict lacks precedents, since it is the first time that Swedish justice judges the crimes committed by members of Islamic State against the Yazidi minority. Ishaq had already been previously imprisoned for taking his son of twelve years to Syria and allowing him to join the ranks of the terrorist group.

The Court has established that “it kept these nine captive people, as if they were part of their property, for almost five months”, in which they were denied “freedom of movement and the practice of their religion.”

“This slavery system imposed by Islamic State has been one of the crucial elements for the genocide commission, crimes against humanity and flagrant war crimes committed against the Yazidi population,” he added.

About 300 Swedish citizens, of which a room are women, joined the ranks of Islamic State in Syria and Iraq, mainly in 2013 and 2014, as indicated by the data of the Swedish Intelligence Service (Säpo).
