“President Trump is very serious in his position,” Wellz emphasized, adding that “all options are on the table.” According to him, Tehran runs as a “irrational side,” and the United States will not allow it to “control the nuclear launch button.” At the same time, a two -party group of American lawmakers calls on the European Trekoika – UK, France and Germany – to run the Snaponback mechanism and impose new sanctions on Iran. The reading comes against the backdrop of what they call “recurring violations” of the 2015 nuclear agreement.
The proposal, submitted by the Republican Sen. Pitt Ricts Manburska and has been supported by 11 other representatives, calling on adopting the “maximum pressure” approach that characterized the Trump administration policy towards Iran.
The Snapable mechanism, which is enshrined in the Security Council’s 2231 decision, allows automatic return of sanctions in the event of breach of the agreement. Previous attempt by Trump administration to operate the mechanism in August 2020 failed, after European ownership claimed that the United States has no authority to operate since its retirement from the agreement in 2018.
According to Washington officials, the implementation of the mechanism may lead to the return of Iran’s international sanctions, including military and economic sanctions, and further escalation in tensions between Tehran and the West. At the same time, the contacts between Washington and its allies in Europe continue in an attempt to formulate a coordinated policy in front of the Iranian challenge.
