1.7 % increase in prices in France in January

INSEE revised consumer prices up in January. While the provisional estimate was 1.4 %, according to the final results this is reality of 1.7 %. This strong evolution, quite rare, between provisional estimate and final results. It is due, according to INSEE, to “the integration of the average prices observed in January for doctors, more dynamic than for the provisional estimate and to take into account changes in crèche prices in January”.

In detail, the rise in prices over a month is explained, according to INSEE, by that of services prices (+ 0.3 % after+ 0.5 % in December), in particular health services (+ 2 , 4 % after + 0.4 %), and social protection ( + 2.8 % after stability).

A punctual drop in manufactured products

The only positive point for consumer wallet, manufactured products have dropped more than the previous month of -1.1 %. However, this drop could only be punctual due to the sales.

In total, the harmonized consumer price index which makes it possible to compare inflation between European countries increases in France by 1.8 % over a year, as in December.

However, INSEE is still counting on the slowdown in prices in the coming months. In his forecasts, he estimates that inflation will be dropped to 1 % over an year in June.
