Both the outgoing chancellor of Germany, the Social Democrat Olaf Scholz, and the candidate with greater options to become a new head of Government of Germany, the conservative Friedrich Merz, were today optimistic for the crucial elections of this Sunday.

Merz was confident in the victory and asked the parties of the alliance he presides, formed by the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its Bavarian alliance, the Christian Social Union (CSU), to remain united.

“There are just under 26 hours left for the traffic light system to finally history in Germany,” proclaimed the president of the CDU, referring to the government coalition formed by social democrats, liberals and green, arising from the previous elections.

Merz has thanked Markus Soeder, the leader of the CSU and regional prime minister of Bavaria, his cooperation during his years in the opposition: “I thank not only for good cooperation, but also for the warm reception in Bavaria moment”.

For his part, Scholz was optimistic about the success in his constituency of Potsdam, in the federated state of Brandeburg.

“I am quite sure that I can win the constituency, like the last time,” the candidate for the Chancellor of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) told DPA a day before the general elections, to which 59 million Germans are called .

“The atmosphere is conducive to this,” he added. Scholz appears as a direct candidate in Potsdam against, among others, the Foreign Minister of the Greens, Annalena Baerbock. In the morning he visited a campaign in the city center and spoke with the citizens, but the interest was scarce.

He assured that if he wins the direct mandate in Potsdam, he intends to remain in the Bundestag throughout the legislature, even if he does not be head of government again. “That is safe for a long time,” he said in response to a question of journalists.

He was also confident for the general result of voting. In the last polls, the social democrats were located at a distance from the conservative alliance and the alternative ultra -rightist for Germany (AFD).

Scholz, however, with undecided voters, encrypted in 20% of the electorate. “I don’t believe in Milagros, but in an electoral victory,” he said, “and I am convinced that this time many people will be decided at the Electoral College.”
