China increased to buy Ca Mau crabs

The Vietnam Association of Seafood Processing and Export (VASEP) said that the export turnover of crabs to China in January reached US $ 18.5 million, 18 times higher than the same period last year.

According to businesses, this growth comes from consumer demand for the Lunar New Year. In addition, Vietnamese goods are increasingly competitive advantage. Crabs imported from Australia, USA, Canada are large (2-3 kg) and high prices, while Ca Mau crab is smaller, reasonable price, meeting the needs of Chinese consumers. Moreover, Ca Mau crab has delicious, sweet meat quality, suitable for the culinary taste of this market.

When the supply was not enough, Ca Mau crab price occasioned the Lunar New Year to a record high. In Nam Can district, in January, crab bricks type 1 (from 400 grams or more) to reach 1.1 million VND per kg, crab type 2 reached 900,000 VND per kg, and meat crab type 1 at 750,000 VND per one per percentage kg. Although the price has cooled down after Tet, Ca Mau crab remains high, ensuring good profits for farmers.

Mr. Du Thai Binh, Director of Du Thai Binh Co., Ltd. in Nam Can, said that the demand after Tet decreased, the supply of sea crabs in the people was not much, making the price remain at the level of benefits for farmers.

Not only exciting export, the domestic market also recorded strong consumption. Ca Mau crab is still the best -selling item in the crab – crab group today.

With more than 250,000 hectares of marine crab farming in a square shrimp, Ca Mau becomes the main production area, concentrated in Nam Can, Ngoc Hien, Cai Water and Dam Doi. Crab production is worth more than VND 10,000 billion per year, prominent with firm, sweet meat quality, preferred as gifts and food processing on Tet holiday.

80% of Ca Mau crab production is exported to China, making this market a factor that dominates the important price of Vietnam’s crab industry.
