Energie.be offers customers free electricity on Sunday afternoon in spring and summer

With the promotion, which has been given the name ‘Energieke Zondag’, the small independent supplier from the Luminus stable is looking for a solution for green energy that would otherwise be lost.

“Especially on sunny spring and summer days during the weekend or during the holidays, there is an excess of green electricity,” says co-founder and Co-CEO Tom van den Bosch. “At those moments, companies use fewer and fewer people are at home, so that almost no one enjoys cheap, green energy. At the same time, a large current surplus is not good for the electricity grid, which must be in balance at any time. Today, for example, large sun roofs are temporarily disabled or wind turbines are being stopped to prevent overproduction. But in this way a large amount of green and clean electricity is lost. “

To encourage customers to shift their consumption, they pay 0 euros for their electricity in the spring and summer months on Sunday afternoon. That does not mean that the consumption is completely free on Sunday afternoon. On an average electricity invoice in Flanders, the actual electricity accounts for around 41 percent of the total settlement, the rest includes network costs, taxes and VAT. They still have to pay customers on the electricity they use on Sunday afternoon. Already 5,000 customers have signed up on the promotion.
