The book sector billed more than 1.2 billion and sold 77 million physical copies in 2024, “historical record”

The book sector in Spain billed more than 1.2 billion euros in 2024, 10% more compared to 2023, and sold almost 77 million printed books. These figures, collected by GFK, are “historical record” and have been presented this Thursday by the Germán Sánchez Ruipérez Foundation, which highlights last year as the “most successful to date.”

In addition, the entity ensures that physical bookstores have registered a 9%increase, which reflects “positive evolution” and “greater adaptability” against new forms of literary consumption.

On the other hand, the gender analysis reveals an equitable distribution in value between fiction, non -fiction and child/youth, with each one contributing approximately 30% of the total.

In that sense, the Germán Sánchez Ruipérez Foundation has highlighted the growth of two digits in the fiction and children’s/youth segments, which reflects a “diversification in tastes and a commitment to innovative and quality content for all audiences.”

Madrid leads in sales

As for Geography, the analysis shows that the city of Madrid leads in terms of sales and trends, and also stands out in the digital field: 35% of the internet population is connected to websites related to books and literature, of which almost 15% are users of Madrid.

The figures presented reflect that the positive trend of recent years continues and it is interesting to relate it to the growth of reading indices in Spain. It is an industry that depends on the strength of reading habits, which are the main asset of a society that wants to progress, “said the director of the Germán Sánchez Ruipérez Foundation in a statement.
