Football: After brutal foul: online rage against Millwall goalkeeper

After his brutal foul against football professional Jean-Philippe Mateta, goalkeeper Liam Roberts was massively attacked on social media. His club FC Millwall condemned the “disgusting insults” against the goalkeeper. The media, whose reporting “contributed to unjustified reputation damage” and the “hideous” insults on the net against Roberts would have “contributed to unjustified calls for reputation”.

Shortly after the start of the round of 16 in the FA Cup, Millwall keeper Roberts had hit the former Mainz Mateta with the tunnels of his left shoe on the side of the head and saw the red card for this. The attacker of Crystal Palace, who won 3-1, had to be sewn with 25 stitches on the left ear.

The 30-year-old Roberts contacted Mateta the same evening and “expressed an apology that was immediately accepted”, according to the English media.

“Most reckless attack on a soccer field”

Mateta will recover in the coming days when he can play again is still open. “I’m doing well. I hope I will be back very soon. And stronger than ever, ”the 27-year-old had written on Instagram.

Roberts’ foul had caused violent reactions. “That was the most ruthless attack on a soccer field I’ve ever seen,” said Palace Chair Steve Parish. Millwall emphasized that Roberts Mateta did not foule on purpose.
