What happens when the body is obese?

Heart impact: Obese people are at high risk of cardiovascular disease due to increased blood fat, high blood pressure and chronic inflammation. Excess internal fat increases bad cholesterol (LDL), reduces good cholesterol (HDL), leading to atherosclerosis, increasing the risk of stroke and myocardial infarction.

Increased risk of diabetes: Excess fat can make cells difficult to absorb, causing hyperglycemia. Over time, the cells of the body are resistant to insulin (hormone helps control blood sugar), increasing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Impact on the respiratory system: The amount of excess fat in the body pinched the lungs and airways, reducing respiratory ability, leading to shortness of breath even when mild exercise. Obesity is also associated with sleep apnea syndrome due to excess fat compression of the respiratory tract, causing interrupt sleep, lack of oxygen at night, increasing the risk of high blood pressure and heart disease.

Increase pressure on the musculoskeletal system: Large body weight increases the pressure on the joints, especially the knee, hip and spine joints. This increases the risk of osteoarthritis, chronic back pain, reducing mobility.

Increase the risk of cancer: Obesity increases the risk of many types of cancer such as breast, colorectal, liver, kidney, prostate and endometrium. The main reason is chronic inflammation, endocrine disorders, accumulation of toxins in adipose tissue, changing cell division, stimulating tumor growth.

Endocrine disorders and reproductive health: Hormonal changes due to overweight, obesity can cause women to have menstrual cycle disorders, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), reduce the ability to conceive. Obesity men are reduced in testosterone levels that cause erectile dysfunction, reducing sperm quality.

Impact on the nervous and psychological system: Obese people are at high risk of depression, anxiety disorders and inferiority in appearance. The discrimination easily leads to stress, creating a vicious circle between negative emotions, uncontrolled eating.

The World Obesity Federation (WOF) predicts 51% of the global population, equivalent to 4 billion people, will be overweight in the next 12 years. WOF calls for “action to control this situation”.

In Vietnam, the percentage of overweight and obesity tends to increase. The Ministry of Health recorded in the decade from 2010 to 2020, the number of overweight people in adults and children increased twice, to more than 20%.

To reduce the risk of obesity and prevent complications, Dr. Ngoc recommends monitoring of weight, applying scientific weight loss measures. Obese people experience health complications that need to be coordinated by a multi -specialist to achieve high efficiency.
