OP and Nordea are challenging MobilePay – “With the phone number you can pay for a friend and online store”

Banking group Nordea and OP Group are planning to launch new account-based payment services.

They compete with the mobile charging market, which dominates the Danish -based MobilePay.

The issue was reported by Nordea’s Nordea Personal Customer Business Director at the press conference on Tuesday Jani Eloranta and OP Arjen’s Financial Services Director Peura period.

“The phone number can be used to pay for a friend as well as in the online store, and order recurring and individual e-invoices in the future,” banks say in their announcement.

The new services work in mobile banks or similar payment applications. Banks do not develop a separate application.

Customers will receive new services during 2026, banks say.

Initially, in addition to OP and Nordea, the OMA saving bank is involved in the cooperation.

Originally, Nordea and OP set up a joint venture for payment of account-based accounts in 2023. The FCA approved the establishment of a joint venture in February.
