More than 470 organizations are opposed to reduction tax deductibility donations

More than 470 Belgian organizations warn in an open letter for the consequences of the planned reduction of the tax deductibility of donations from 45 to 30 percent by the De Wever government. A broad coalition, including 11.11.11, come up against Cancer, Amnesty International and the King Baudouin Foundation, calls the measure “an attack on the generosity” that threatens thousands of initiatives.

The organizations emphasize that the measure has far -reaching consequences for both large and small associations that depend on private gifts. According to the signatories, the gifts of at least 40 euros deliver 362 million euros annually for 2,500 recognized associations and foundations, an amount that has doubled in ten years.

The change has hundreds of charities such as large organizations such as 11.11.11 and Oxfam, but also small local non -profit organizations. Universities, hospitals, certain museums, the Red Cross and, for example, the King Baudouin Foundation are also on the list of recognized institutions.

“Consequences for human lives”

“What seems to be a technical saving for the government has real consequences for human lives and social cohesion,” the open letter says. The coalition points out that more than a million Belgian households donate on average more than 350 euros per year to one or more of the 2,500 associations and foundations that are recognized to collect gifts with tax benefits.

The organizations state that the saving of 40.26 million euros per year for the state treasury contrasts sharply with social damage. “What we are in danger of losing is not an abstract system, but an ecosystem of solidarity,” said the letter. The open letter calls on the government to review its decision. “Solidarity is not a luxury, but a sustainable investment in society,” the signatories conclude.
