The White House to the call to return to France the statue of freedom: “If not for the USA, you would speak German”

The press secretary of the White House Caroline Levitt commented on the call of the French deputy of the European Parliament from the progressive alliance of socialists and democrats Rafael Gluxmann to return the statue of freedom to France.

“This will not happen. And I would advise anyone to be a well-known small French policy not to forget: if it weren’t for the United States, the French would have spoke German now. So you should be grateful to our great country,” Levitt said.

Speaking on March 16 to his supporters, Gluxmann turned to the US authorities: “Return to us a statue of freedom! It was our gift to you, but, apparently, you despise it. We will be better for it!” These words were met by applause and approving whistle.

The statue installed on the island of Freedom at the entrance to the New York Bay became a symbol of the United States and was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The monument “Freedom, illuminating the world” was created according to the project of Auguste Bartoldi with the participation of Gustav Effel and solemnly opened in 1886.
