Some information is still missing, but some have started to filter. Several American media revealed on Friday that the Trump administration was preparing new restrictions for citizens in more than 40 countries. The list, which circulates within the government, provides for three categories.
First, “red” countries, whose citizens are categorically prohibited from entering the United States. Afghanistan, Bhutan, North Korea, Cuba, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Syria, Syria and Yemen would be concerned.
Then the “orange” countries. For their nationals, entry to the United States would be extremely limited, but not completely prohibited. Obtaining a work visa for “wealthy business travelers” under certain conditions (notably the obligation to submit to an interrogation) would be possible, but students and tourists, they would be deprived of it. In this list could include Belarus, Eritrea, Haiti, Laos, Myanmar, Pakistan, Russia, South Sudan …
About twenty countries are expected to land on a “yellow” list and benefit from 60 days to clarify their position on several points (security, travelers, etc.) at the risk of being switched to one of the other two categories. Among them, Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Cape Verde, Chad, Mali, Vanuatu, Zimbabwe…
Questions about citizens already present in the United States
Sources close to the file have informed the New York Times that this list could still be changed by its arrival at the White House, scheduled for next week. For example, if cooperation with a country was likely to be jeopardized by its presence in this or that category.
But for the time being, there are still big questions, starting with whether these travel restrictions will also concern citizens who are already in the United States, and if the owners of a green card will be subject to these rules.
In 2017, during his first mandate, Donald Trump prohibited citizens from certain countries in what he called a “Travel Ban”. When he arrived at the White House, Joe Biden canceled it. But upon his return to power in January, the republican billionaire signed a decree asking his government to identify countries whose nationals should be prohibited from the United States for security reasons.
These restrictions, if applied, will be even more severe than during Donald Trump’s first visit to the Oval Office, sources close to the file said in the New York Times.
