A butterfly researcher was amazed when at home a butterfly fluttered from the edge of the world – the explanation is globalization

In theory, a strange butterfly could do well at least in the summer in Finland. Winter could be too hard for it. However, there are alien species that succeed surprisingly.

The abstract is made by artificial intelligence and checked by man.

A butterfly researcher living in Kirkkonummi found a butterfly living in New Zealand.

The butterfly probably arrived with a gold palm bought as a houseplant.

The alien species can be surprisingly spread, as shown in Finland, the chestnut, shows.

Butterfly researcher Pasi Sihvonen In his own house in Kirkkonummi, he was able to prove how the world’s organism can be mixed as a result of human activity.

An organism may end up in a completely foreign environment on the other side of the globe, as international trade has, in a way, brought the opposite corners of the globe.

Therefore, so -called alien species that may be detrimental to indigenous species can move from one country to another. There are examples of them, for example On the Alien Species sitewhere you can also indicate the observations of the alien species.

Pari A week ago Sihvonen’s spouse Karoliina Reunanen Suddenly a small butterfly in the house, which was not recognized by a butterfly investigator. At least Sihvonen is the leader of the Zoological Unit in the Natural History Museum, and European butterfly species are in control.

After the investigation, the fly investigator was amazed. It was an individual of a crambidae tribe in New Zealand. Its scientific name is Diplopseustis perieresalis.

“With the help of colleagues, I learned that these have been observed ten times in Finland, even though they are not mentioned in official databases,” Sihvonen ponders.

According to literature, the species has been carried by man to the Canary Islands. There are a few observations from recent years from the Netherlands and Germany.

Diplopseustis Perieresalis is not part of Finnish nature but New Zealand.

European observations are linked to the barrel palm, or betel palm, which is cultivated as a houseplant.

Sihvosen The fly caught and investigated apparently arrived in a gold palm. A couple of weeks earlier, the family had purchased a houseplant from a large home shop.

“So probably individuals have come to other Finnish homes this spring,” Sihvonen estimates.

There was probably a butterfly housing in the flower pot, from which a butterfly hatched at Sihvonen’s home. Or she was fluttering, because in a couple of days there was another individual in the home. Both were dogs.

“The lifestyle of this species is poorly known. Adult butterflies probably live for a few weeks or months. If individuals came to Finland in the summer, there could be a small chance that a male and female could reproduce,” Sihvonen ponders.

In New Zealand, the butterfly is presumably living in the yard plants, and there are numerous Saroja in Finland. In the summer, a small butterfly might still live, but winter might be a difficult challenge for this particular alien species, as for many others.

In the world However, there are examples of modest insects that have been unfortunate and surprisingly successful in new angles.

South American “Palm Puhoja” Paysandisia Archon In Spain, they settled in palm trees and the individuals of the species began to eat palm trees inside and kill them upright. According to Sihvonen, Palmus had to be removed from the residential areas due to a surprisingly tough alien species.

On the other hand, Finland has spread to Finland since 2006 Cameraria ohridella -Tananmijai. The species was previously known only in the Balkan region, but it spread across Europe in a few decades.

“They are very small, less than a centimeter, and they were thought that they could not spread and succeed here,” Sihvonen says.

Sihvonen planted a horse chestnut in Kirkkonummi in his garden a few years ago and butterflies found trout the following summer. The larvae make the corridors inside the leaf, causing the leaf to curl and brown.

“I also noticed in Kirkkonummi that there could be thousands of butterflies around one horse chestnut in August,” Sihvonen says.

Somehow, the butterfly has managed to overwinter in Finnish conditions, he ponders.
