The Paraguayan government increased surveillance on the border with Brazil after being informed about the risk of criminals from factions such as Comando Vermelho (CV) fleeing to the country.
The measure comes after Argentina announced that Brazilians will undergo stricter scrutiny when trying to enter its territory in response to the mega-operation carried out in Rio de Janeiro this week against organized crime.
Since Thursday morning (30), there has been an increase in the number of police officers and the number of vehicles crossing the border in Brazil, according to the Paraguayan National Security Council in a statement.
The body linked to Paraguayan defense also signaled that authorities had begun intelligence operations to identify threats from the Red Command in the country, such as whether any member of the faction wanted by Brazilian justice tried to enter neighboring territory.
“In view of the situation, national institutions with competence in matters of security and control adopted extraordinary prevention and surveillance measures across the entire border strip in eastern Paraguay,” informed the council.
The previous day, Argentina’s Minister of Public Security, Patricia Bullrich, announced that Javier Milei’s administration designated the CV and the PCC as narco-terrorist organizations and activated “maximum alert” on the border with Brazil.
