Boxing Day: Why the Premier League is breaking tradition

The traditional one „Boxing Day“ in English Premier League is only a shadow of its former self this year. Usually almost a full round is played on December 26th. The date is extremely popular with football fans. This year is on Stefani day but only one game was scheduled – the one between the record champions Manchester United and Newcastle United.

The professional league cited the tight schedule as the reason for its thinnest “Boxing Day” program since 1982. Due to the expansion of the European Cup competitions last year, the Premier League only has 33 weekends available for its 38 rounds. Five rounds are planned during the week.

“With fewer weekends available, the league is dependent on how the calendar falls,” a Premier League statement said on Friday. December 26th is a Friday this year. The following weekend 27th/28th December must be fully used for games. In 2026, on a Saturday, “Boxing Day” should be more lavish again.
