Former hostage Alon Oel underwent surgery on his eye and shoulder

Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva reported that Alon Oel, released after 738 days of captivity in Gaza, underwent eye surgery and orthopedic surgery in which shrapnel was successfully removed from his shoulder.

The complex eye surgery was aimed at restoring the structure of the eye and improving vision after a long period of deterioration caused by harsh conditions and lack of medical care, the hospital administration said in a statement quoted by the Ynet website.

Professor Irit Bahar, head of the ophthalmology department at Beilinson Hospital, notes: “This was a complex and unusual eye operation, which was planned to be carried out two years ago. We removed several fragments and performed a lens transplant. The operation was successful, and in the coming days we will know how much vision has improved.”

Alon Oel is a musician. He’s already playing the piano again. His general health is assessed by doctors as satisfactory. However, there will be a long rehabilitation period for a full recovery.
