A dangerous phenomenon: hairs are pulled out of the nose

Did you know that removing hairs from the nose can be dangerous? Well – we were surprised too, but this is what Dr. Sophie Matut, a doctor specializing in the Otolaryngology department in Ichilov, claims.

The doctor notes that people come to the hospital from time to time, who in general wanted to get rid of the disturbing hair in the nose area and gain a more aesthetic appearance, but many times they find themselves in a hospital that requires drainage of pus and even the administration of intravenous antibiotics.

The explanation, according to her, stems from the fact that the nose area is a dangerous area known as the “dangerous area” (Danger zone). “If, for example, you shave or perform an operation to remove hair in this area, you may cause a wound, and wounds in the nose area are very dangerous. We call this area the ‘dangerous area,’ because infections that are there, may rise through a venous system that has no valves directly into the brain. This may lead to meningitis and, in rarer cases, even life-threatening.”

She points out that the patients she has encountered recently are mostly men, who had to be hospitalized due to the phenomenon, and right now a man is hospitalized in the hospital who had to undergo drainage of pus and treatment with antibiotics. “It is a young man who plucked the hair in the nose area and the whole area became swollen and pus.” By the way, she explains that the most dangerous thing is plucking the hair with tweezers or wax. “This type of action can injure the area. Using scissors can also be dangerous, especially if the scissors are not properly disinfected.”

Dr. Matot clarifies that in any case it is important to have a finger on the pulse and be alert for disturbing signs in the nose area. “If you see a wound or redness, pain or secretions – it is important to see a doctor, using antibiotics in time may prevent complications. Sometimes you can make do with an antibiotic ointment, but it’s important to check and not take risks.”

She adds that the phenomenon is especially dangerous for those who suffer from diabetes or suppressed immune systems, but the entire population is exposed to the dangers associated with the operation.
