Pope in the Middle East: “We are friends with Israel”

Pope Leo XIV said the Vatican supports the two-state plan because it is the only solution that is fair for both sides. He made this statement on board a plane en route from Turkey to Lebanon.

“We know that at the moment Israel does not accept this decision, but we consider it the only way to end the conflict. We are friends with Israel and are trying to act as a mediator that will bring the parties closer to a fair solution,” he said.

On the afternoon of December 1, the Pontiff will meet with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, the only Christian head of state in the Middle East. The Christians make up about 30% of Lebanon’s population, but are divided into many faith communities.
