With the first start in Bulgaria and the traditional finale in Rome, the 109th Giro d’Italia will take place from May 8th to 31st, 2026. A total of 3,459 kilometers and 49,150 meters of altitude await the professional cyclists on the second largest tour in the world.
It is still unclear which of the superstars will compete. Recently there was speculation that two-time Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard from Denmark would start. Dominator and world champion Tadej Pogacar is more likely to aim for the classics again in the spring. Last year the Briton Simon Yates won the Giro.
The tour of Italy begins in Bulgaria for a total of three days. It is the 16th start of the tour abroad. It starts on the Black Sea coast with the stage from Nessebar to Burgas. On the third day we also head for the capital Sofia.
The decision is likely to be made in the last week on the difficult stages in the Dolomites. On the queen stage on the third-to-last day from Feltre to Alleghe, the 2,233 meter high Passo Giau also has to be overcome. Before that, the only time trial over 40.2 kilometers takes place in Tuscany on the tenth stage.
