109 boxes of waffles stolen in aid of Chiro Kingslo: “Young people seen trying to sell cookies door to door”

Head teacher Elia Fanchin says that the theft probably took place on Friday evening in the classrooms on the Romansteenweg. “But we only discovered the burglary on Sunday,” says Elia. “Some local residents have seen young people walking away with boxes of waffles. Some are now looking at their camera images because we do not have them ourselves.”

The battle

The waffles – a diverse package with about twenty different types – had already largely been sold to parents. “We thus sponsor our camps and other activities.” Half had been delivered, the other half was ready for collection. “When we went to distribute them, we discovered that they were missing. About a dozen boxes were left behind.”

The perpetrators forced windows to gain entry. “There is clearly damage: one window has been broken, another has been forced open. Financially this is all on top of that. For a youth association that runs entirely on volunteers, this is really sad,” said the head teacher.

About a gate

How the perpetrators managed to take 109 boxes remains a mystery to the management. “You get in through a broken window, but you still have to drag that entire amount. We suspect that they have come back several times. There is also a gate. You can climb over that, but not with 109 boxes.”

Door to door

In the meantime, young people have even been seen trying to sell waffles door to door in the neighborhood. “They’re not personalized boxes, so people don’t immediately recognize them as our waffle sales,” Fanchin said. She asks local residents to be alert. “When waffle sellers suddenly show up at the door with boxes, there is a good chance that they are our stolen waffles. We ask people to contact the police immediately. Anyone who has seen something can always contact us via [email protected].”

Everything voluntary

Adult supervisor Joke Cartigny also reacts excitedly. “Our members have worked hard in recent weeks to sell waffles. That money is used to pay for fun activities and our camp. We think it is a shame that a youth association is treated this way, where everything is done voluntarily but with a big heart.”

Understanding

According to Fanchin, this is the first time that Chiro Kingslo has been confronted with a burglary. “In the meantime, we have to ensure that parents receive their ordered waffles. We plan to reorder and deliver everything. We will solve this out of our own pocket for the time being, which means that the loss will increase to around 600 euros. Although we also expect that many parents will be understanding and will no longer want new waffles.”

The VIMA police zone (Vilvoorde-Machelen) confirms the theft, which must have occurred between November 29 and December 7.
